Engineering and Operation of Skid Steer Loader

A skid steer loader or skid loader encompasses a rigid frame. It has been an engine-powered machine equipped with lift arms, which is used to attach a number of labour-saving attachments or tools. Skid-steer loaders would be described as a four-wheel drive vehicle having left-side drive wheels independent of the right-side drive wheels. With each side independent of the other, speed of the wheel and direction of rotation of the wheels would determine the direction in which the loader would turn.

Skid steer loaders could turn in their own tracks that make them highly manoeuvrable along with valuable for various applications that need an agile and compact loader.

Unlike the conventional front loader, the lift arms equipped in these machines have been alongside the driver having the pivot points behind the driver’s shoulders. Due to the proximity of the operator to moving booms, old skid loaders were not comparatively safe as conventional front loaders, especially during entry and exit of the operator. Contemporary skid loaders have completely-enclosed cabs along with various other features for protection of the operator. Similar to other front loaders, it could carry materials in its bucket, push materials from one location to another or load material into a trailer or truck.

Operation

A Skid Steer loader could at times be used in place of a large excavator. It would dig a hole from the inside. The skid loader would initially dig a ramp that would lead to the edge of the desired excavation. It would then make use of the ramp for carrying material out of the hole. The skid loader would reshape the ramp and make it longer and steeper with the deepening of the excavation. This method has been specifically useful for digging under a structure, especially where overhead clearance does not enable the boom of a large excavator. Some examples would be digging a basement under an existing house.

The conventional bucket of most skid loaders could be replaced with an assortment of specialized attachments or buckets. Most of them have been powered by the hydraulic system of the loader. These would be inclusive of wood chipper, cement mixer, wheel saw, snowblade, roller, tilt, grapple, tillers, ripper, dumping hopper, trencher, tree spade, stump grinder, snow blower, mower, auger, sweeper, angle broom, pallet forks, hydraulic breaker and backhoe.

Other Popular Loaders

Among the popular kinds, there have been three major kinds of loaders such as wheel loader, skid loader and backhoe loader. The wheel loader has been the front-end heavy loading vehicle. The skid loader is also a heavy lifting vehicle that comes equipped with lifting arms and other attachments for construction applications. The backhoe loader has been yet another popular engineering vehicle or equipment commonly used in construction industry. It appears as a tractor equipped with two loading buckets, a large one at the front and a small one at the back.
